Football meets American football as European soccer powerhouses Manchester United and Real Madrid will meet in a match at Michigan Stadium this summer.
As MLive reports, the University of Michigan Athletic Department confirmed what's been reported for months in a press conference earlier today. Man U and Real Madrid will face each other at the Big House Saturday, August 2. Fox will air the game at 4 p.m.
“We are excited about the opportunity to host two of soccer’s premier clubs at Michigan Stadium,” Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said in a release. “This is a rare chance for the Ann Arbor community and thousands of soccer fans in and around the southeast Michigan area to watch elite level professional soccer. This event will have a positive economic impact on the city of Ann Arbor and the state of Michigan and will continue to extend the Michigan brand internationally.”
The match is part of an eight-team tournament, dubbed the Guinness International Champions Cup, that will visit 12 U.S. cities. Pre-sale tickets go on sale this Monday, April 7, while tickets to the general public will be available this Thursday.
This will be the second non-football event that the Big House will host following the NHL Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this year. Over 104,000 people attended the game featuring the two Original Six rivals.
