Michigan High School Hockey Player Found Dead Day of Tournament

Grandville High School student Ryan Fischer died this morning (March 7) just hours before he was scheduled to lead his team to the state semifinals.

Grand Rapids Press reports that Fischer's father found his son unresponsive when he tried to wake him. An autopsy performed at Spectrum Health today revealed that the co-captain died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or an enlarged heart, according to Dr. David Start. Fischer would have turned 18 next month.

Grandville is scheduled to play against Detroit Catholic Central tonight in a Division 1 hockey semifinal at Compuware Arena in Plymouth Township. The game will still happen, per the wishes of Fischer's family and Grandville High School.

“Our staff enjoyed knowing Ryan as an engaging member of the MHSAA student advisory council for two years, and we grieve his loss with the entire Grandville community,” MHSAA Executive Director Jack Roberts said in a statement.
