It's great to be a gold medalist at the Olympics. It's even better when you're winning medals for the home country. Russian Olympians who won gold were awarded with a large amount of cash and a new luxury car.
As Yahoo reports, those who came in first at Sochi for Mother Russia received $120,000 and a brand new Mercedes GL SUV. The pot was made even sweeter for 15-year-old figure skater Julia Lipnitskaya as she snagged a personal driver as well. Silver medalists scored $76,000 and a Mercedes ML, and bronze medalists got $52,000 and a Mercedes GLK.
To put that in perspective, the U.S. Olympic Committee pays out $25,000 for a gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for a bronze medal. The gap in medal bonuses is even wider for Switzerland. Dario Cologna won two gold medals in cross-country skiing and all he got was a pig.
