The 2014 MLB Draft started on Thursday. The Tigers took Elk Grove (Calif.) High School outfielder Derek Hill with the 23rd overall selection. The 190-pound center fielder bats and throws right-handed. Hill is the first position player taken by the Tigers in the first round since Nick Castellanos in 2010. Hill came into the Draft ranked as the 20th best prospect by MLB.com. He is the son of former Minor League outfielder Orsino Hill and a cousin of former MLB outfielder Darryl Strawberry. With the 63rd pick, the Tigers used their second selection on University of Alabama right-hander Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull, at 6-foot-3, has a fastball that reportedly tops out at 98 mph. Turnbull went 5-7 with a 2.22 ERA in his junior season this spring with the Crimson Tide.
